to double as an extra seat if guests arrive! Children love such a seat, and having no back on it, two small children can sit on it at once!
Tips for the entertaining living room
1. Ensure there is an interesting centerpiece on the coffee table. Be imaginative! It could be a crystal glass boat shaped dish, filled with water, a few rounded pebbles and a central bronze figure balanced securely on the pebbles. Complete the image with fresh flower petals floating in the water. Drain after guests leave. Then fill again when next you entertain. Change the whole look with a different selection of fresh flower petals. And the point of all this? You are capturing the spirit of the natural elements and generating the power of a feng shui experience. You are offering your guests a little of your spirit and a little of the universal spirit!
2. If entertaining during cool to cold days, ensure curtains are drawn back to maximize light and a good flow of chi energy. Feature the window space with a crystal suncatcher so the room is bathed in a play of colored light. On hotter days, close the curtains and use a small desk lamp, on the sidetable, with a blue colored bulb- to give the illusion of cool light. Importantly, sit away from the radiation of the light and ensure it is hooded in non heating material. Better still, use a CFL globe with minimal radiation and it's environment friendly!
3. Living room entertainment is often a night-time experience. So consider lighting. If you don't have a dimmer switch on the main light switch, have a portable tall lamp available. If you wish to create an ambient mood, it can be moved to create shadow, indirect lighting. But what about candles? Candlelight could be the ultimate ambient experience, but if there are a number of guests and you have no safe sideboard to place the candle, the coffee table is not really an option. It is just a crisis waiting to burn. Play safe! Use the portable light! It can double up as your trusty reading light on more casual days.
Once the basic concepts of feng shui are applied to the living room, then the homeowner can integrate personal ideas and tastes! Feng shui is not a limitation! It is an inspirational way to apply nature's principles in the home! And the living room is a great place to put your imagination on public display! (And to relax in your successes!)
