A living room is a challenge for feng shui. But not impossible! The living room is a relaxing space- viewing TV, listening to music, reading, or indulging in a "cat nap". It is also a space for entertaining guests. That means it is both a private, casual area and a more public "performance" one. Feng shui can offer some ideas that accommodate both functions.
Tips for both casual and "entertaining" living room
1. Keep space round furniture free flowing, to enhance the flow of positive chi energy
2. Have at least one plant. The Peace Lily should be one choice, to absorb negative, electrical energy, to improve air quality and to add a touch of a living, flowering spirit.
3. Wall tones should be subdued, preferably neutral creams, to create a "light" and alive effect. Furnishings, such as cushions can complement or contrast this lightness according to personal taste. Far less disruptive to change soft furnishings, as personal tastes pass, than to change paint colors.
4. Keep electrical equipment to a corner space so it seems less intrusive.
5. If there is a log fire, curl the lounge chairs round the fire for a more intimate atmosphere.
6. In summer, widen the arc of chair positions so a turning ceiling fan has spaces to circulate air.
7. At the end of each day, clear clutter of cups, glasses and plates from the coffee table, symbolizing a clean space for tomorrow. Avoid staleness and leftovers. They are a form of negative chi.
8. Mirrors! Indulge in a wood or metal framed oval mirror! Two, if the room is large enough! Magical dimensions and perspectives can be achieved with well-placed mirrors. But take care what the mirror reflects! An exquisite jade figurine on a pedestal is perfect! Symbolically, you are reflecting good fortune! But never reflect a doorway! If the door is open, all incoming positive chi is smartly reflected back out!
Tips for the casual living room
1. Have a drawered sidetable (by the lounge) or drawered coffee table so that reading material can be cleared easily when guests arrive but still accessible as the need arises.
2. Have an oil burner on the coffee table. To soothe jangled nerves at the end of the day, fill with lavender(sweet) or a special combination of lemon and sage (more herbal) oils and light immediately. The scents wafting in the atmosphere help the tired brain "turn off" and slowly relax. Or, if you prefer scented candles, try colors to suit your dcor!
3. Have a large poof available for aching legs and feet. Ensure this is large enough to
