Feng shui's focus on balance and harmony is the magic answer for a decor-strapped bathroom. Often, the bathroom is the second smallest room in the house (second only to a separate toilet). It has long been a focus of cleanliness and coldness (from tiles). Rarely does it attract much creative thought beyond cleanliness, colour co-ordinated towels and maybe a luxury soap. But feng shui can change all that.
To start with an older bathroom that has little more than a bath, (a shower maybe over the bath), a washbasin, a mini square shaving mirror that challenges a short person, a couple of chrome towel racks and a small, opaque-glazed window. A couple of accessories can lift this bland cleansing environment.
Invest in a large, wood-framed oval mirror to keep positive chi energy circulating. This alone will create an illusion of space and depth. Avoid frameless, sharp-cornered mirrors. They disperse chi energy in unproductive bursts. Remember, in this room, your body is naked, ultra sensitive to the atmosphere and energies in it. All good must be optimized.
The bathroom is a drainage area. If your bathroom is pale toned, consider a large red, softly scented dripless candle, to offset the waste of all forms of prosperity down drains. The red symbolizes wealth. Burn the candle when you bathe, night or day. It provides a relaxing atmosphere for your tired body.
Finally, find a safe place for a white ceramic bowl of smooth pebbles. (Safety glass could be ideal, so the depth of the pebbles may be seen). This is both a symbol of grounding, earthiness complementing the transient, watery environment and, practically, will trap positive chi, slowing its escape route down drains. (If you have a separate toilet area, put one here too! A red rug round the toilet base will slow wealth loss! And close the toilet lid when not in use!)
Plants are a tempting item in the bathroom, but many are sensitive to the changing humidity levels in this room. Try a climber, such as ivy. (Ensure the leaves are not sharp-edged, though!) It is hardy and can be trained to reach upwards on a wood lattice framework! A spiritual symbol of reaching from earth to sky!
Consider ceramic, earthy toned mini vases for toothbrush holders, though with children in the house, for safety reasons, it may be desirable to fix this firmly to a surface near the washbasin. Consider a crystal suncatcher hanging in the window space to disperse light.
And continue your regime of colour co-ordinated, soft towels. Maybe work with
