Darkness appeared over the chamber walls yet every now and then a
flickering flame would dance , casting a moment's light. An eerie
quietness settled over the cavern and a chill ran through Courtney.
What plan did Death have in mind for her? She knew he would not kill
her, not yet. Not till he had Caleb and the treasure. Then she heard a noise so slight she thought she had imagined it, but no there it was again. Footfalls were heard in the distance and they were advancing rapidly in her direction. Closer and closer
they came till they entered the darkened chamber that held her
prisoner.
A bright flash of light hit the area and for a moment all
were blinded. Then as their eyes finally adjusted they saw Courtney
and beside her stood Death.
Storm held back his rage only to save Courtney. Death had his
fingers entwined in her hair and as each moment passed would jerk her
head towards him.
Caleb felt her pain and it nearly brought tears to his eyes.
She had suffered so much over the years, they both had, but mostly
her. He had been all to her, mother, father, brother and yes even
best friend. But she had needed a mother and never had one. He
watched as silent tears trailed her cheeks.
Damn the inheritance, it was not worth this. Death could have
it. All he wanted was peace and for him and Courtney to quit running.
Storm was now a part of all that. He was a good man and good for
Courtney. But now was not the time to reflect on neither past nor the
future, now was the time to find an escape.
It didn't look good. In the center of the room a rock pillar
stood. It reached from top to bottom and at least four foot wide.
Midway down a skeletal face had been etched out and a set of bull
horns protruding from it. On the left horn blood had stained the tip,
some in streaks some in spots. The right horn held a heavy chain,
which was hooked to a tether around Courtney's neck. Then passed her
back hooked to her jeans. The tips of her feet barely touched earth.
Her eye was black and blood oozed from a small gash to her cheek.
Storm and Caleb both made a move towards her and death
tightened his grip upon her hair, bringing fresh tears to her eyes.
Both men stopped as if they had been frozen.
"So gentlemen you have finally arrived. Now I have you both
and exactly where I want you, in my power. You know what I want Caleb.
I'm so tired of having to continually track you down. You see my
