Feng shui tips for the living room

The living room is the most social part of your home. Use Feng Shui to ensure that you make it welcoming and relaxing for you, your family and friends.

Your living room is usually, as its name suggests the center of home life. It is often the first room you enter in a house, therefore it is one by which the whole home may be judged, allowing it to be a great place to express yourself. It is essential the Feng Shui is correct as the whole family will be using this room for a wide range of differing activities.

You will entertain friends in this room, watch television, read the newspaper, play with your children or just relax. These activities often call for opposing requirements in the Feng Shui of the room. It needs to be a place of fun and conversation at the same time as being a sanctuary in which to wind down with a good book. In this room you should be able to express your outer personality through decoration, photos and paintings, but without cluttering the space or making it too busy' for the peace of mind of your inner self.

According to the Bagua the best position for your living room is at the front of your home in the family area. Unless you have the luxury of building your own home from scratch, however, you cannot decide on the position within the property. Yet a living room elsewhere in the house can work equally well the key is to use what you've got.

If you have a nice view from the rear of your property, arrange the room to take advantage of it. Alternatively, if you can see the living room as you come into the house, and it is a relaxing room, you will be drawn to it. The first room you see on entering the house can affect your behavior when at home, and you should ensure that the entrance in your home is arranged to achieve this.

There are several main factors you should consider when setting up positive Chi for your living room, such as color schemes, seating arrangements and lighting.

This section will show you basic design principles to help achieve better Feng Shui in your living room.

Use bright lighting for formal occasions, and table lamps for informal activities. If this room is dark, then place up-lighters to create a balance of Yin and Yang. Windows are the eyes of a home and should be kept sparkling clean. Also use curtain fabrics that promote warmth and comfort.
Electronic equipment should be kept to a minimum and ensure that the television is not the focal point of the room.
