The latest studies are very scary to say the least. CNN reported in 2005 that today's generation of children have shorter life expectancies than their parents for the first time in history. In this "fast food" and "plugged-in" generation, the risk of obesity and obesity-related illness has increased exponentially in the last few years. According to UNICEF, 26% of Canadian children are obese, and those numbers are even higher in the United States. In light of these studies and their terrifying results, it is more important now than it has ever been to get your children involved in activities that require an active, rather than a passive participant. Parents need to have a wealth of fun activities and ideas at their disposal in order to successfully compete with the computer and television.
1. Be A Role Model.
We have learned that the philosophy held by many older generations, "Do as I say, not as I do," is not a very effective method of teaching our children right from wrong. Teachers tell us if we want our children to read more, we must model that behavior and read more ourselves. Similarly, if you want you children to be more active, you must model active behavior. If you spend less time in front of the television or computer, your child will learn that these other activities are valuable. Get outside and play, garden, go for walks. Show your children that real life is much more exciting than television.
2. Make It Fun.
Drawing and crafts are great, but why not make it interesting? Go to the dollar store and buy a plain white paper table cloth and markers. Let your children create a beautiful table cloth that you can use for a few meals. Try hanging large pieces of paper for them to decorate on the wall. This is not only fun, but is also helpful for younger children with poor fine motor skills. It is easier for them to draw in this position than it is to draw on a piece of paper that is under their arm on a table or desk.
3. Exercise with your child.
There are many fun exercises that you can do with your children. Walk like monsters in the backyard. Take big steps back and forth across the yard. These lunge steps are great for your legs and glutes! Have your child lie on the ground, stand over thier chest and hold each other's arms, then lift your child slowly up and down for a great triceps workout. Bike or walk together. Talk to your child about why you feel it's important to exercise. Ask them for some ideas. You'll be surprised by their creativity.
4. Write A Snail Mail Letter.
Computers are a great way to keep in contact with loved ones. However, wouldn't it be great to get something in the mail besides bills? Have your child write a letter and draw a picture for Grandma or Aunt Bessie. Send it off in the mail and wait for them to write back. What a great surprise!
5. Board Games.
Board games are still fun! My kids will gladly turn off the television if I want to play a game of Jr. Monopoly! That is the truly terrific thing about board games today! Many of them have child friendly versions that are easy to play. The kids love kicking my butt! Plus, they are learning how to count and add and subtract.
The above are just a few suggestions. There are many things you can do with children without being plugged-in. The most important thing I have learned from my own experiences is that I can't just say, "Turn off the T.V. and go play." Children look to us for cues. We need to show them, not tell them how to be active. So, turn off your computer and go give your kids the tools to live a long and healthy life.
