Most everyone experiences occasional cloudy urine and typically it's nothing to worry about. As long as there are no other symptoms associated with it, likely as not, the cause could be something as simple as mild dehydration.
In most cases, cloudy urine is a result of phosphaturia, a benign condition in which excess amorphous phosphate crystals form in the urine. Cloudy urine often occurs following a heavy meal or after ingesting a large quantity of milk or other dairy products such as ice cream.
Morning urine is usually always a bit cloudy as no fluids are consumed for several hours so urine is more concentrated which again is perfectly natural and no cause for concern.
White urine is sometimes due to pyuria in association with an infection of the urinary tract which is commonly accompanied by other symptoms like burning or pain during urination. Cloudy or murky urine could also be caused by the presence of bacteria, mucus, fat, or phosphates which usually has a fairly strong acidic or foul odor.
Urine color can range anywhere from clear to dark yellow, and even red, or orange. Clear urine usually represents a well-hydrated person while dark yellow urine is a sign of dehydration. When the kidney has less fluid to eliminate its waste, the fluid element compared to the waste factor is less so urine is stronger. Red urine is a sign of bleeding or hematuria, which should be reported to your doctor right away.
There are several medications that can change the color of urine along with certain foods with harsh dyes such as candy or flavored soft drinks. Changes in urine color, or the presence of an abnormal odor that can't be linked to the consumption of food or medication, should be reported to a doctor if it happens for more than a day or two.
Many of us tend to flush before rising from the toilet, paying little or no attention to what our bodies are eliminating. This is a mistake as our urine and feces tell us what's going on inside our bodies and could very well alert us to a problem before it becomes serious.
In summary, cloudy urine, unless accompanied by other symptoms, isn't particularly important. Certain foods and medication can change the color of urine which is perfectly normal. However, if the cloudy urine is accompanied by other symptoms such as burning, an unusually strong smell, or traces of blood, seek the advice of a physician.
