The American Pit Bull Terrier, otherwise known as the Pit Bull or the APB, is a wonderful dog that has been horribly abused by the media and people. This behavior has been seen over and over again with various other dog breeds. The Pit Bull is just the latest victim. The Rotweiler and the Doberman have gone through the same thing. As has the Akita and the Bull Dog. During the time before World War II and during World War II the American Pit Bull Terrier was everywhere. He was a symble of strength, determiness and loyalty. He sold everything from shoes to American Pride. He was the pet of the year in many ways. He was so popular that he would eventually get into the wrong hands and handled to become agressive.

After the War and the GI's were back, looking for families, home and the American pet, then the Pit Bull's life became hell. It was not a planned problem. It was caused by shell shock and a lack of the knowledge on training dogs. The Pit Bull became to fight. That was the undoing of this once proud and strong dog.

As money started to get into the ring, fighting became the life of many of these dogs, doing what their masters wanted them to. The ones who fight these dogs get large profits while the dog gets torn to shreds. There is often a lot of drugs at the event. This is not the type of owner who should ever own any dog.

As is seen with the Michael Vick case, it is not a case of the dogs wanting to bite, attack, or fight, but rather what they are raised to do. The police and animal control officers who went into the place said that the dogs were good dogs, just horribly beaten to be aggressive. The ones who stayed close to the normal nature of the dogs, a friendly dog, were killed in horrific ways. This happens all the time to these great dogs. A normal Pit Bull in a normal family has all the potential in the world to be the greatest dog ever. They can be trained as service dogs and help a person be independent. They can be used in hospitals to help people recover with their soft fur and wet noses. They have incredibly high pain tolerances to handle the pulling on the ears from little fingers. They have patience to deal with inconsistant owners and difficult training.

As time passes and fighting become to dangerous for the men and women who fight these dogs, or too expensive, or both, then a new devil dog will arrise, and the the pit bull can finally take his place in the family enviroment. Until that happens, there will be the debate on the quality and temperment of the american pit bull. As mine lays down beside me every night, I rest assured of her quality and temperment as my best friend.
