Why people are so fascinated by owls

Owls strike us as mysterious and a little bit scary which earns them a place with the other "odd birds" of Halloween such as Frankenstein and Dracula. Owls are even odd among other ornithological creatures and never cease to fascinate us.

Who else besides Linda Blair in the Exorcist can turn her head like that, I ask you? Who? Who? Who? And who can stare a hole through you with solemn, unblinking eyes, turning its head to follow you as if animated by pure evil? Who? Who? Who? It's vocalizations wafting on the wind are rather eerie as well. "Whooooo, Whoooooo, Whooooo".

These fascinating qualities of the owl have not been lost on Hollywood. A plethora of zombies and haunted dolls have mesmerized and mystified audiences for decades with their entrancing eyes and freakish head spins. Ok, so an owl can't do a 360, but close enough!

Owls exude an aura of mystery that makes them seem not wholly of this world. It would be easy to believe they are the watchers among us, sent to observe the actions of mere mortals on earth and report back to their parallel universe.

In mythology birds are associated with communication, as in the winged heeled messenger, Mercury. Our word "mercurial" means ever shifting, ever changing. Perhaps the owl comes to bring us a message. Its magnetic eyes draw us in and we listen. How could we not? The "wise old owl" has something to teach us. But we must watch and listen because nothing is always as it seems.

Our world is filled with oddities, and mysteries, and endless sources of fascination as exemplified by the humble owl. Learn from him well and never lose your sense of fascination and wonder. Colors will beam more vibrantly, shapes will reveal more clarity, scents will emanate more intensity, and sounds will resonate more cohesively.
