Book reviews: Stitch 'n Bitch: The Knitter's Handbook, by Debbie Stoller

Stitch n Bitch The Knitter's Handbook is a great book for a beginning knitter. It teaches you how to knit, about the tools for knitting, and how to fix mistakes. It also provides a variety of patterns that range from easy to hard. This book also acts as amazing reference material once you have learned how to knit and need the occasional refresher.

Part One of Stitch n Bitch provides a perfect introduction to knitting. It explains the types of wool, and the tools you need. It also provides step by step instructions that range from how to knit and purl to increase and decrease the number of stitches. I also found the stitch doctor's guide to fixing mistakes not only helpful, but project saving in some situations.

The second part of Stitch n Bitch provides over 30 different patterns. They range from hats and mittens to bags and clothing. Almost all of the patterns have a funky aspect to them. Each pattern is laid out clearly and includes information on materials, gauge, color pattern and direction. I particularly found the skills box at the beginning of each pattern especially helpful. The box lists the skills needed to make the project and on what page of the book you can find instructions to complete the skill. I also enjoyed that there was a section in the middle of the book with color photographs of most of the projects. My favorite projects are the Coney Island fireworks scarf, the punk rock backpack, and the big bad baby blanket. I also liked that they included a pattern for a roll-your-own needle case.

I would highly recommend Stitch n Bitch The Knitter's Handbook to any knitter of any level. It is a fun book filled with enough funky projects to keep you knitting for a while.
