Business cards: Tips on making them effective

Does Your Business Card Sell?

Most people never give any thought to their business card. But shouldn't you?

The standard business card is part of your corporate ID package, along with stationery, envelopes, labels, invoices and other forms. It simply tells who you are, what company you're with and how to get in contact with you. And if you really consider your business card as merely part of the corporate ID package, maybe that's okay.

But shouldn't your business card really be considered part of your marketing mix? I believe it should be. And if you operate from that perspective, then it deserves a lot more thought and consideration.

Not only should it include your name, the company name and logo, and your contact information, but it should display your Unique Purchase Appeal, some of the key benefits of doing business with you, and an offer.

In other words, it should be a small, but complete sales presentation.

"WOW!" you exclaim in dismay. "That's an awful lot to fit on a business card!"

Yes it is. But it can be done. You may need to use both sides of the card, however. On the front of my card, for example, I have my name and title, my company logo, and all my contact information. But I also have my Unique Purchase Appeal, "Helping you get more customers who will pay you more money, more often the fastest, easiest, most cost-efficient way possible."

Next to the UPA, in green, bold type, I have the words, "Over please."

Yes, I'm telling the reader to look at the back of the card.

On the back is a picture of me with a caption telling people who I am. I also have several benefits listed and a partial list of the products through which I deliver those benefits.

And here's the clincher. I make an offer. I offer people a FREE Marketing Fitness Check-up a $147.00 value when they call.

You see, when you consider your business card part of your marketing mix, you'll want it to be a complete ad, telling people what you do, why it benefits them, and how they can immediately take advantage of your what you offer.

Here are some tips for making your business card a more effective marketing tool

1. Make sure your card is horizontally formatted. This is easier to read and easier to scan or file. Don't throw up a road block to ease of use. It just gives people an excuse to throw your card away.

2. All of your basic contact information and your Unique Purchase Appeal MUST go on the front of the card.

3. If you are going to use the back of the card, use that little phrase "over please" on
