There are three types of Diaper Rash, and the basic prevention techniques are the same in each
~ Ordinary Diaper Rash ~
Ordinary Diaper rash will look red, will not have reached the skin folds and will disappear within a couple of days. This form of Diaper rash will cause your baby to feel a sting or burning sensation when they dirty or wet themselves but they will otherwise feel well.
To help prevent ordinary Diaper Rash you should use a barrier cream immediately after cleaning them up. I always found Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) to work the best on my two boys, an excellent choice of protection against the next call of nature.
You should change your baby often, as soon as they have "done something" as this will prevent any bacteria building up on the skin.
Fresh air is very good in preventing Diaper Rash though not always practical. I used to lie my boys on a towel over a plastic sheet. It also works very well when your baby has a rash as fresh air is a good healer.
~ Fungal Diaper Rash ~
If your baby is bright red and sore in the folds of their skin then they may have a fungal rash. This is caused by a fungus which will grow if it has the right condition of warmth and dampness. Your baby will be feeling uncomfortable and may be upset when you change them.
Follow the advice above but if this does not help then you should consult a Health professional for advice.
~ Bacterial Diaper Rash ~
A Bacteria Infection can occur if the skin has been weakened by a rash or a scratch, allowing Bacteria to flourish. Your Baby may be distressed, red and sore or have a fever.
You should consult a Health Professional immediately for advice.
It is so important to change your baby often and when needed as prevention is better then cure and be aware of any changes to your Baby's skin.
