In this day and age, what could be more important than family traditions? We live in a world that has become so cynical and faithless. However, as a mother I have only to look into my children's eyes and know that there is hope for the future. Because of this hope, as a family we have created many wonderful holiday traditions.
All of our traditions are meaningful but when asked, my three year old and six year old will tell you that the one most important to them is simply the reading of the Christmas Story and Twas the Night before Christmas right before they go to bed on Christmas Eve. Not only do I want my children to experience the whimsical magic of Christmas with a story about Santa Claus, I want them both to understand the true meaning of Christmas with a story about the birth of Jesus.
As we gather around a fire or in a large group, all of the adults take turns reading the stories. The understanding of the importance of the birth of Jesus and then the excitement of Santa Claus arriving is so pronounced in the faces of the children that I could read both stories all night.
Someone once said that we never know true love or joy until we have children and I completely agree. Add to this joy and love the magic of Christmas Eve and I forget all that is wrong with the world and focus on all that is right. Traditions begin with family and the meaningful ones are those in which everyone is together.
