It depends on one's physical fitness and preference. Walking, which is a more relaxing form of exercise, can be as beneficial as running. For those who are obese, overweight and have hardly ever done any exercise, walking would be a better choice to begin with. If you prefer walking for fitness, you should attempt to walk a long distance. In this way, you might be able to burn off the same amount of calories as running a shorter distance.
However, if you have little time to spare for exercise, it is recommended to run for fitness. Running exerts more stress on the knees and joints than walking. Always do some warm-up and stretching before running to reduce possible risk of injury during exercise. Remember to drink plenty of water before and after exercise.
For both walking and running, calorie consumption shouldn't be your main goal of exercise; cardiovascular fitness is.
