Personal accounts of Thanksgiving memories

Through the cool crisp air, sunlight shines on his face, accentuating the soft, delicate skin and joyful smile as you bounce him up and down. Your strong hands lovingly grip around his giggling ribcage. Hands that have lost all awkwardness and self-doubt, but retained a reserved strength and certain dignity brush back soft brown ringlets of curls. He smiles in his father's arms. He smiles with his eyes, with your eyes. Both pairs catch the golden autumn sun and sparkling brilliantly in the pure joy of the moment. They have a trusting and loving innocence impervious to the world's harsh realities. It's eerie for me to see the same caring eyes in the face of another, even your own son. In yours, I see the depths reflect crystallized experiences of the past, love, loss, laughter, footprints and friendships. In each warm change from green to brown, his reflect a future of possibilities. Just like his dad, he radiates an energy, a passion for life and way of finding beauty in the mundane. These qualities draw the luckiest of us into your company. A slight breeze plays at my hair and brings the burning reds and yellows of falling leaves swirling. It's starting to get cold, but not wanting to interrupt the tender moment, I simply place my hand on your shoulder. Back in the kitchen, the delicious smell of turkey in the oven welcomes us, comforting and homey. Later, with everyone's hearts and belly's full, I thank my lucky star, my guardian angel, whatever higher power or combination of chances that led me here. I am thankful to spend the holiday with the two most genuinely caring and good-natured pair of men I've ever met.
