This debate has been going on for a very long time. My opinion is a heart felt, Yes. However I believe that the only thing that should be accounted for is that the job be one of equal title. If you have a woman doing the job of construction foreman, she should recieve the same pay as any other construction foreman.
If the job being offered offers pay that matches experience with pay range, then men and women should recieve the pay associated with how long they have been doing that job. All US companies should take this approach, equal pay for equal work. Fair wages for job title and experience are important to the moral of the person doing the job.
If the best man for the job is a woman then why not pay that woman the same pay as the man, since she was hired for her ability and not her sex.
I heard a story from a friend once, she said she went to a car dealership for a job, after reviewing her resume and conducting a lengthy interview, she was invited along with two other men to sell cars. After working for this company for 3 months, she was doing extremely well, selling an average of 3 cars a week, which at the time was well above the standard for this particular company.
She was asked to give the pay checks to the manager by the company accounting clerk and she happened to glance at one of the male employees pay stub which was on top of the piles of checks, she noticed that he was being paid 3 percent more than she was, and that they started work at the same time. She was very angry and went to the personnel director, who promptly dismissed her for breaching confidentiality and looking at another workers pay stub.
She went through a long and tedious court battle to get reinstated, to have her percentage of pay raised, and to be treated fairly. She was awarded all of these things because it was a clear case of sexual wage discrimination. So the company should have paid her more in the first place since not only was she doing a job equal to the men but she was also doing it better that they were, and expected to do it at a lower rate than they were.
