of the interviewee first) so I have hundreds of mini-cassette tapes. You would not believe how fast these little cassettes take over a closet or cabinet. Find a way to file your cassettes to keep them safe from heat, rain and snow. I have also used digital recorders but I seem to keep returning to the cassette tapes, I just seem to trust it more.

9. I also do many photographs with my articles and need a safe and dry storage system for the 35mm film or for the CDs now that I am doing strictly digital photography. Here's another tip inside a tip. If you do photography with your articles and writing projects, you need to develop a project numbering system to include your photographs. I have spent hours looking for a photograph before I started to number the photos to correspond to the article, project, etc.

10. Coach yourself on destroying old records as often as you can. I have articles and research that are 20 years old. I just can't bring myself to throw any of it out. I could keep just the article and dump the research. I could put it all on CD (actually I have most of it on CD but I am still hanging on to the paper files). I just haven't gotten myself coached into the destroy function, yet.

Work files will overcome you very quickly and you will spend as much time working with your filing system as you will writing if you don't take the time to develop a really good filing system.
