Where do we get our personal values?

members of my race. Throughout my life I have found that the best way to get over any obstacle, to let go of any hurt is to talk to people. I believe that in the struggles of everyday life it is communication with our friends, relatives and acquaintances that keeps us sane.

Although in the role of a social carer personal views must be overtaken by the professional values of the job, it would be silly to think you could blank them out altogether. Even when policy and procedure must be followed it would be difficult to leave your personal values at the door. So having values, which can relate in someway to the cause can make things easier.

My values may not directly link to the values adopted by social care however they do relate in some ways. For my placement at college I have been sent to a children's respite, in this case my value of stability ties in very well. It is the workers job to create a feeling of stability for the children during their stay, to make them feel comfortable and secure. So here I can draw on my understanding of this need for stability and put it into practice for the children. Respect is one of the most obvious values I share with the practice of social care; it is one of the main values in the theory behind the profession and underpins the practice and procedure in this line of work. It is imperative that every individual is valued no matter what their situation; every person has the right to be treated with respect.

Communication may not strike many as an important faction in social care however; I feel that the ability to tactfully explain and portray situations to service users could be invaluable. In relation again to my placement communication is essential. Everyday the staff participates in a hand over to discuss how the children behaved the night before and discuss which children will be coming to them that day. This way they can make sure they are ready to cater to each individuals needs and can put in place any precautions that may be required (e.g. securing windows or locking bathroom doors). This happens every day and full staff meetings occur every two weeks. Communication between staff is a major factor in this sector of care and is highly valued.
