Flirting tips for boomers: How to do what doesn't come naturally

to what they are doing or wearing. If you are standing behind someone in line at a checkout counter take note of what they are wearing and make a nonthreatening compliment "that's a pretty sweater, that's a great color on you," or something similar.

Develop a flirtatious attitude. Be positive. Be approachable. If you have a snooty, aloof attitude, people are not going to want to flirt with you and they won't respond positively to your flirts. Remember you don't have to start every flirting encounter. You need to be ready to respond to a flirt with a flirt.

Warnings-Flirting Pitfalls

Flirting with someone at work is fraught with peril and best avoided. Whether you are successful or a failure flirting with someone at work the results can be disastrous. Many employers have rules against employees dating. Even if they don't if you flirt with someone and it goes badly it can make work uncomfortable.

Be prepared to back off from flirting if you get you get any negative signals at all. People have different experiences and who knows what may be viewed negatively. If you push the wrong buttons and upset someone it is no longer flirting and smacks of stalking. This is particularly true if you are in at work or a situation where you are flirting with the same person several times. Respect the person and leave him or her a way to graciously reject your flirts. If they are not interested in your flirtations, stop. Respect a person's responses, don't be afraid to step back. There are plenty of people around who will respond positively. Enjoy them.

The Internet has many websites about flirting. If something sounds good, give it a try, but take the suggestion with a grain of salt. If something doesn't work try something else. The Social Institute Research Center (SIRC) has a description of flirting followed by some excellent tips on how to flirt http://www.sirc.org/publik/fli rt.html. Wikihow also has some guides on flirting. Some are better than others. "How to flirt" found at http://www.wikihow.com/Flirt is a good one. Others are listed at the bottom of Wikihow's flirt page.

What are you waiting for. Get out there and have fun. Flirt and flirt again. And don't forget to reciprocate, if someone flirts with you, flirt right back. It's part of the game.
