Around 6:00 PM I walked into building 140 in the Via Verde Plaza in San Dimas, joyous to enter an air-conditioned place. A maze bewildered me as I walked along the corridor. I was met by a young couple who, like me, were also going to the presentation. I finally came upon a small blue sign indicating the area where the presentation was to be held. I walked in and there were about 8 or 9 people in the waiting room either already registered or waiting to be taken care of. I hopped in line behind the couple I had met in the hallway and another couple walked up behind me as I fanned myself with my note pad from the intense heat I endured from the drive up. The room was quaint. A large, elongated seat lined the wall, and directly opposite, a desk with two well-dressed women manning it. After a few minutes, another lady walked into the room and invited everyone who has already been helped to step into the second room off to the side, and to grab some cookies and water or coffee. One set of people really caught my eye: two young boys of about 16 or 17, and an older man, working- class. The boys giggled between themselves as the father sat there with his head down, seemingly sad or tired. It didn't seem as if he wanted to be there. I was then called up to register my name and confirmation number, and sent into the mystery room of cookies and coffee. I walked into the large, formatted room and got water from the Sparkletts machine in a provided white, Styrofoam cup.
I took a seat in the back of the room in order to observe everyone and everything. And as I walked back to the high table in the rear of the room, I noticed that at the table next to mine, there was a shady-looking man wearing dark colors and a cap that shaded his eyes in an eerie way. He had a big cup with him from the local mini market.
The place was nicely laid out. There were huge pictures of hotels and condos in different cities and countries all around the walls. Track lighting highlighted the pictures, giving them a lively glow. There were plenty of tables, high and low, surrounded by colorful, but relaxing chairs or couches. There was a podium set in the middle of the front of the room and a projection screen right behind it, playing a loop of strategically shot videos of "everyday people" who love their timeshares. The refreshment area was in front of the door, so when someone walked in, he or she could get something to eat and/or drink and have a seat, not to bother the speaker when he
