Leafy Seadragon

The Leafy Sea dragon gets its name from Chinese mythology. The scientific name is Phycodurus eques. If you were to see one, you would be looking at a piece of seaweed floating in the water. They are green, orange and gold and have very strange leafy appendages, which help to hide from predators. The only predators they have are humans. The only way to know if it is near you is when it is moving around with its tiny fins. And can only be found calm and cold water somewhere between 50-54 degrees.

The Leafy Sea dragon makes its home on the Australian seashore. Since 1982, the Australian government protects these animals. This Sea Dragon has become the mascot of South Australia. The District Council of Yankalilla holds a festival to honor the environment, arts and the culture of the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula and their theme is the Leafy Sea Dragon and has attracted thousands of visitors.

They range in size from 15-18 inches. Being similar to the common seahorse, after the female deposits her eggs; which can be as many as 200; he carries them in a honeycomb shape known as a brood patch under his tail for eight weeks.
