God has a sense of humor. Indeed, as he created humanity, it would be strange if He did not, for we are created in His image. I think, therefore, it is reasonable to assume there is laughter in heaven.
My father is a minister. When I was growing up, he would sometimes say the funniest things without the slightest idea he had, like the time he informed the congregation that Mary Magdalene washed Jesus' hair with her feet. Well, of course, that's not exactly what happened, even if it is an amusing mental image. But there is one incident that stands out particularly in my mind.
Dad taught a Wednesday night Bible study for years. This particular Wednesday, he was teaching on Lot, and his removal from Abraham's camp toward the city of Sodom. My Dad gets pretty loud when he's excited, and he isn't often careful enough when speaking. This evening, he got really excited, and had a major foot-in-mouth episode. Describing Lot's attitude after leaving Abraham's company, Dad said, "And Lot PINCHED his TITS toward Sodom!"
Now if you are familiar with the story, you know that is not what happened. Lot actually PITCHED his TENTS toward Sodom.
Dad didn't know he'd done anything wrong until one of the most stoic members of our church started laughing. She laughed, and laughed, and finally, when the realization of what Dad had said penetrated the rest of the crowd, they all started to laugh. That's when Dad finally figured out he'd made a bit of a error.
Everyone laughed so loudly, they woke up a teenager sleeping on the front pew. When he demanded to know what everyone was laughing about, Dad replied, "If you missed it, I'm sure not going to tell you!"
Do you think God laughed at that? I'm sure he did. Goodness knows the rest of us did, and haven't let my father live it down in the ten years that have passed since then.
Consider, for a moment, the joy and laughter that comes with meetings and reunions, friendship and family here on earth. I cannot believe the God who made us in His image would create an eternal home bereft of the love laughter shows. In a place where there is no sorrow, where God himself will wipe away our every tear, there is sure to be an abundance of laughter.
