The relief theory and its effect on humor

Tears run down your cheeks uncontrollably. You sob until you are unable to breathe. You feel as if the world is about to end. Nothing in your life has felt this awful.
There are people all around you and you wish they would all just go away. But they are going nowhere and they are no help to you.
YOU are at your father's funeral. He was the only one in your family that understood you, didn't judge you, loved you unconditionally, and now he is gone. He was only 54 years old and died of a heart attack. He'd never even been sick as far as you can remember. Almost everyone in his family lived into their 90's so this has shocked all concerned.

If ever you needed relief; it is now.
Suddenly, your kid sister makes an inappropriate wise-crack and you both start giggling uncontrollably. (Also inappropriate.) Just when the two of you are beginning to get yourselves under control, you notice your brother glaring at you as if you are the ones who had killed dad. You both burst into laughter again and can't stop.
Exit to powder-room.
You and your sister muffle laughs for a couple of minutes in the ladies' room. Finally, under control, the two of you feel a great sense of relief and can go back without laughs and without tears.
In retrospect the wise-crack wasn't even that funny.
But you both got what you needed from it, relief.
