Being a best man means that you have been entrusted with the greatest of duties; ensuring that the groom remains calm, cool, and collected through a hectic day. This responsibility can be nerve-wracking and stressful at the best of times, but when the groom suddenly becomes scared or anxious, then you must really step up and save the day. As best man, it is up to you to know best how to soothe the savage beast.
If the groom suddenly dons a pair of cold feet, the duty of saving him becomes the sole responsibility of the best man, and he must do so in a very calculated, reasonable fashion. The best man is named as such for many reasons, and bailing his best friend out of a jam or two should be old hat. The best man should have the inside track on what makes the groom tick, and they should have a strong enough relationship to confide in with regards to cold feet before the wedding.
The best man should know well before the wedding ever takes place if the union is a match made in heaven, or if it is doomed with ominous clouds looming above, waiting to strike. If the best man feels in his heart that the groom, or soon to be groom, is wavering in his thoughts, somehow ruing the day he proposed, then he should step in and intervene before the situation becomes critical. Knowing what to say to assuage any fears is paramount. Figuring out if it is just nerves or if the union should not take place is a judgement call that needs to be made post-haste, and accurately.
The best man should also be prepared for any last minute nerves faced by the groom. The best man should have a pocket full of facial tissues to keep any nervous perspiration at bay. He should also be sitting on an escape route and a plan of where to stash the scaredy cat before the throngs of angered guests approach with vengeance in mind. There has to be a course of action in place if the unthinkable happens. The best man needs to approach all issues with a tacit calm and an open mind.
The best man needs to be certain that the groom is ready for the big day, and part of that is mental preparation. The groom does not need to be saddled with too much alcohol or promiscuous women luring him with their sultry siren songs. The groom should be well rested and level headed, and the best man should insure that this is the case. The best man also needs to be comfortable enough in his own skin to have a man to man talk about why the wedding will be wonderful, and he needs to be confident in his words and mannerisms, even willing to shed a tear or two for sincerity's purposes.
Whatever the reason for the cold feet, the best man should have in his arsenal a method of warming those feet back up, and must also be of strong enough moral conviction to never, ever, under any circumstances, mention the cold feet to anybody. Not ever. Period.
