Is there laughter in heaven

by Ted Sherman

Created on: November 19, 2007

Of course, there's laughter in heaven. With recent arrivals including Norman Mailer, Peter Boyle, Johnny Carson, Buddy Hackett and Rodney Dangerfield, the angel audiences up there must be rockin' with laughter in the clouds. Of course, when they got there, those humorists must have been happily welcomed by such classic laugh immortals as Mark Twain, Lucille Ball, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Milton Berle, Bob Hope and many others who took their talent with them when they went to heaven.

When I was a kid, my parents told me that thunder was God's laughter, and since refreshing rain and blossoming flowers usually follows, I still believe it. The shortest sentence in the Bible is "Jesus wept." You must know that if he wept, and he had plenty of sad reasons to weep, there certainly had to be some occasions when he laughed.

He certainly had moments, especially when he performed miracles. If you were a wedding guest and were told there was no more wine, think of the chuckles you'd have when someone took some plain water and turned it into sparkling red. Speaking of water, the Biblical tale told by disciples revealed they saw Jesus walking on water. Can you picture the moment when you they saw their leader doing that miracle? It must have caused some admiring laughter, and maybe even Jesus joined in on the laughter when some of the disciples tried it and got soaked.

Heaven or some ultimate destination like it is taught in just about every religion. Most Christian sects believe that a good life on Earth brings the reward of a happy afterlife. Can you imagine any kind of existence, here or in the hereafter, where happiness could not exist without laughter? In fact, not matter what religion your follow or none at all, when you hear the laughter of a child, you know you've seen absolute proof that it originated in heaven.
