Tips on buying binoculars for observing animals in nature

Whether you are an avid hunter or a devoted bird watcher, a set of binoculars is essential for the hobby enthusiast.

If you are in the market for a new set of binoculars, it is important to do some research before purchasing the item to understand the terminology that will result in the best pairing with the buyer.

1) Be clear about the reason for purchasing the binoculars. Be certain of the distance that you will normally be attempting to see, the object of the sight, and whether or not it will be used at night or when there is moisture.

2) Establish a price range. The price of binoculars can range from cheap disposable $10 models to ones that cost up to $1000, so know how much you want to spend.

3)What magnification are you looking for? Many models have 8, 10 or 12 x zoom. Be careful on increasing the magnification as a higher number doesn't necessarily mean better image. As the magnification goes up the brightness goes down. Also understand that it isn't just the picture that is magnified. It will magnify every shake and tremor in your hand as well. The common belief is that 10x zoom is as high as desired for a handheld. More than that you may want to invest in a tripod.

4) The second number is of real importance. This is the measurement of the diameter of the front lens in millimeters. This is what affects performance the most. The larger the second number the sharper and more comfortable the view.

5) Think about what you want for the field of view. This is not the second number. The field of view is determined by the magnification. The higher the magnification, the lower the field of view. A larger field of view is desire if the target will be moving.

6) Discover what the size is of the exit pupil. The exit pupil is the beam of light that leaves the eye pieces measured in millimeters. 5-7 mm is preferred. Larger than that is just a waste of light because the eye cannot see larger than that.

7)Make sure to look at the coating. Fully coated is the worst type. This is the least efficient and is usually seen in the most inexpensive binoculars. Multi-coated is better than fully coated. It simply means multiple layers of the specialized chemicals that make viewing clearer. The best choice is Fully Multi-coated which will provide the best image.

8)Evaluate the eye relief. This is the maximum distance that the eye can be from the eye piece and still see the image. This is important to people who will be wearing corrective glasses or sunglasses while using the binocular.

9) Know about focus. Focus free or no focus lens tend to be in the inexpensive binoculars. Center focus is the most versatile.

10) Consider the weight. Do not purchase binoculars that are over 35 ounces. They will become too uncomfortable. Many weigh between 15-22 ounces for comfortable use.

A good place to learn about particular models and to read reviews on these models is the website: www.binoculars.com which has a variety of models and many customer reviews. This way you can compare and contrast the models and brands before going into the stores. It is always best to try the binoculars before purchasing as this is an investment of a significant amount of money and you will want to select the most suitable set.

The top rated binoculars on www.binoculars.com is the Canon 10 x30 IS Image Stabilized for about $350. The highest rated inexpensive model is the Bushnell 12 x 50 Permafocus Free Wide Angle for $50. Whatever your taste or price range there is a set of binoculars waiting for you. Do some research and find a set that meets all your hobby and entertainment means.
