Most people I know are always looking for off the beaten track destinations. Most travelers i have met are always trying to break away from the tourist trails, discover new places and new adventures.
One place that is certainly unusual and fascinating is Ethiopia.
Ethiopia, a country with unbelievable diversity.
Despite its negative publicity, its a country that is begging for adventure. You will need at least 2 months to scratch the surface of this remarkable land.
One of the most adventurous routes into Ethiopia is via Kenya. In the wild frontier town of Isiolo you will be able to catch a ride to the Southern border of Ethiopia. Isiolo is a town that is torn between two worlds, its also the last town you will see for the next 1200km. The town is alive with all sorts of tribes trading their wares, truckers stopping for a well deserved nights rest and of course a thriving black market. The Isiolo market is one of the most fascinating i have ever been to. Due to the lack of tourists in the area its real, a real African market, it will be an all out assault on all your senses.. The most fascinating are all the natural medicines on display, roots, dried animals, fruits and tonics there seems to be a cure for everything.
Catching a ride is not easy, it can be a patience testing feat, you will have to be sharp and assertive. The only advice i can give is to make sure you choose a truck that has good tyres and make sure you come prepared for the worst. The best way to get into contact with a driver is using the kids on the street, and dont worry about finding them, they will find you.Make sure you agree on a price with the kid before accepting his help. Don't give them any money until you have sealed an agreement with the driver of the truck. Be careful these kids can be rascals, insist on meeting the "driver" in a public place, and don't pay any money until you are ready to depart. Be polite and assertive, these guys know the deal, so seal a deal and when you are ready to go discreetly palm the kid who helped you the money you agreed on, be generous.Only pay half of the money on the day of departure and pay the rest when you arrive at the Border.
The road is notorious for wandering bands of bandits, technically every truck should have an armed guard, but most don't these days as the route is becoming increasingly popular both for trade and for tourists. The journey you will take from Isiolo will be cramped and uncomfortable, it will test your stamina and endurance. For
