Inspiration is more pronounced in some people than others. It really is a question of learning to open your mind to possibilities and experiences that you have everyday of your life and in every situation. The same is true for stories and poems.
For example, spend some time flicking through a newspaper, just glancing at the headlines for large and small items. Note down the ones that have caught your eye. If they stood out more than others there is a reason for that, because they interested you. Without reading the story you should be able to write your, story or poem own based upon what thoughts came to you as you noticed the headline.
Have you ever sat in a cafe in a crowded place such as an airport or shopping mall, and wondered about the lives of the people who pass by? Then use this wondering to build a story or poetry.
Similarly at night, walking through the countryside, or along a beach, watch for the shapes and movements and noises around you. Using your imagination, you can build a story or poetry from these.
Lets look at a more explicit example. If you sit by a stream at night and watch the moonlight moving across the water, it would be easy for some to see this as silver fairies dancing.
Thus it can be seen that inspiration for stories and poetry comes from anywhere and at any time. One just has to have an open mind in any situation.
To take advantage of all the ideas that these possibilities offer, it is a good idea to always carry a notepad. When the inspiration comes, write it down. This way you will not forget it.
