How to prevent diaper rash

911 RASH POLICE!

In my child care center, we have become so good at fighting diaper rash we call ourselves The Rash Police. Diaper rash is nasty, causing children to itch, feel as though their skin is burning, and puts them at risk for infection. Here's how we fight the rash:

1. Nip it early. At any sign of redness anywhere in the diaper area, begin using plain water and gentle baby soap to clean baby instead of using wipes that contain alcohol. Rinse well, and pat until dry. Apply a protective layer of a good zinc ointment like Desitin. In most cases, the rash will be taken care of with these steps. If Desitin is not enough, triple antibiotic cream might promote healing.

2. Diaper with care. Diaper rash usually starts from bacteria from waste trapped too long against baby's skin or by trapped dampness. Carefully clean the diaper area including hidden creases in the skin. Tap dry with a clean cloth. Avoid powders and cornstarch-they simply turn into a paste that irritates skin. Use a gentle vitamin A & D protective lotion and diaper again. In most cases this is enough to keep baby rash free.

3. If rashes are common, pay attention to baby's diet. The rashes could be a reaction to foods that are not agreeing with baby. Work to only introduce foods one at a time to be able to pinpoint problem foods.

4. If a rash has taken over anyway, try letting the baby's rash air out without a diaper on. But if the rash is worsening, seems to be thick, or is hard to get rid of, please consult with your medical professional. Your baby might need a stronger antibiotic lotion or an anti-fungal cream.

All babies get rashes at some time or another, and many babies with fair skin are prone to develop rashes. If rashes develop, don't be hard on yourself. Just use your Rash Police fighting tools and keep an eye on the healing. In no time that bottom will be shiny & clean!
