When you need a new tire on your car do you go to the rubber trees in South America to start the replacement process? Do you then follow that up with multiple trips to the library and the required laboratories to formulate a nice, new tire for your ride? Unless you are some type of wild, adventurous, super-geek, your answer to these questions should be a resounding NO (all caps for shouting compu-speak). To add scrolling windows to a webpage there is no need to "reinvent the wheel" in a day and age of battling against time to GTD (Get Things Done).
One of the best ways to accomplish this daunting task is to use the free, open source JQuery Javascript Library which may be downloaded from:
http://www.jquery.com
comb ined with the Kevin Luck's jScrollPane plugin which may be downloaded from:
http://kelvinluck.com/ass ets/jquery/jScrollPane/jScroll Pane.html
These two combined will allow you to add powerful, cross-browser scroll bars to any block-level element in your webpage. This will allow you to have the ultimate flexibility when it comes to conserving space in your layouts for other content. On Kevin's site you will find examples and full instructions on how to easily use the jScrollPane plugin with the JQuery library. It even let's you use your own graphics for the scrollbars if you want. This is definitely a cool, modern alternative to Flash and other less recommended methods.
