"Isn't it ironic?" Bianca asked her sister. "He never loved her. They haven't even had sex for the past 15 years. Now she inherits everything!"
"He must have loved her once," Gina answered. "He married her."
"Only because I wouldn't marry him," Bianca countered. "He regretted it right from the start. But then that silly cow got pregnant and Franco would never leave his child."
Bianca stopped talking to light up a Parliament. Her thirtieth of the day, so far. She usually restricted herself to four or five, but today was different.
"I don't mind about the house, the money, or the business. Sofia can have all of those. The chalet does bother me. She never even went there. I doubt she knows that it exists. It was our place for the last ten years. It was where Franco and I would go to make love. When they probate his estate it will be found and Sofia will get it along with the rest."
Gina had heard this before. All morning. Ever since they picked up La Stampa and read about Franco's accidental drowning in Lago di Como. It had infuriated Bianca all the more that Sofia hadn't bothered to call her to let her know.
"She didn't know about us," Bianca stormed once more. "She only knew we were good friends since childhood. Why wouldn't she call me?"
"Maybe she did know," Gina replied. "Or at least she suspected."
"Never! That fat fool isn't even aware if it rains! Even before me, Franco had affair after affair and Sofia never knew a thing."
"Maybe she preferred not to know," Gina said. "She might have found it easier to go on that way."
"Franco and I discussed that," Bianca acknowledged. "It is possible. After all, he gave her a home, her money, and her place in society. If she confronted him with his infidelities it all would have been over. Franco had made her sign a prenuptial agreement that left her with nothing in case of a divorce.
"She has no pride. She would have preferred to live as his housemaid than go to a divorce court - and that is what she really was, just a maid. She cooked for him and kept house. He didn't want her for anything else.
"But still," Bianca continued, "I think she honestly had no idea of what Franco was doing. She actually believed that Franco did not have sex with her out of consideration. She has no interest in sex at all, she has told me that a hundred times."
