How to fight pregnancy fatigue

Fatigue is a natural occurrence during pregnancy. At times you may feel exhausted and completely drained. It is normal to feel tired as your body adjusts to its pregnant state. During the first trimester hormone levels are changing and your body is going through a state of flux as it nurtures the new life growing inside. As the pregnancy progresses fatigue may occur due to added weight gain which may contribute to insomnia and difficulty sleeping. Women who work full-time jobs or are already mothers caring for young children may be especially prone to added fatigue during pregnancy.

There are steps that you can take to help alleviate the fatigue while pregnant. Nutrition, exercise and proper rest are essential to good health during pregnancy. Following are some tips to keep your energy levels up during your pregnancy.

Get plenty of sleep.

Everyone needs an adequate amount of sleep each night in order to properly function. Sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. You may find that you require a bit more sleep now that you are pregnant. It is normal to need an hour or two extra in order to feel refreshed. Go to sleep early to make sure you get enough sleep. Take a nap each day if possible. Even a half hour of rest around midday can help rejuvenate you and alleviate that fatigued feeling.

Get adequate exercise.

You may be thinking that exercise is the last thing you need considering how tired you feel but exercise really will make a difference in your energy levels. You don't need to go to the gym for an aerobics class to get exercise. Keep it simple. Get in the habit of taking a daily walk. Not only will the walk get your blood pumping but the fresh air will be invigorating as well.

Take frequent breaks.

Rest when you need to. Don't overdo it with household chores or other tasks. You don't need to clean the whole house everyday from top to bottom. Make a list of daily tasks and assign certain tasks to specific days. For instance, Monday may be laundry day. Take breaks whenever you feel fatigued so that you do not get overly tired. Don't be afraid to call up a friend or relative to ask for assistance if you need it. Friends and family members will usually be more than willing to lend a hand.

Eat healthy.

It is very important to get proper nutrition. You don't have to eat more but you do need to eat healthy. Now that you are nurturing the growing life inside of you your body will require more vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Eat a balanced diet so that you get adequate amounts of the nutrients you need. Instead of eating three large meals a day eat several smaller meals instead. Eating large meals can leave you feeling exhausted. Smaller meals will provide you with the energy you need without leaving you feeling drained.

Certain foods will boost your energy levels rather than making you feel tired. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Foods such as lean meat, eggs, cheese, yogurt and peanut butter will help to sustain your energy levels. Your diet should reflect a healthy balance of fiber, protein and carbohydrates. Instead of having coffee and a donut for breakfast start your day with eggs, toast, whole grain cereal and orange juice. Remember to snack healthy too. Instead of reaching for a candy bar or bag of chips eat a healthy snack of yogurt or whole wheat crackers with peanut butter.

By following a healthy regimen of rest, exercise and nutrition you can maintain your energy levels throughout your pregnancy. Just keep in mind that whatever is healthy for you is also healthy for your unborn baby. Take care of yourself. Your body will thank you and so will your baby.
