7) Welcome the birds. Put up bird houses and feeders in your yard. Make sure to place a bird feeder near a window so that the birds can easily be seen from the house. Kids love to watch the birds that peck the small holes and studying the birds that are too big for the feeder that gather around the bottom to munch the fallen seeds. Make pine cone bird feeders with peanut butter and bird seed and hang in the trees. The kids will even enjoy watching the comedy of squirrels as they try to rob the bird feeder. Remember it is all part of the learning process.

8) Volunteer. Look for nature conservation groups that can use your help. Even if children are not allowed to volunteer, by example children will learn that plants and animals are important to our planet and our lives.

9) Develop a book collection. From toddlers on children appreciate stories about nature. Purchase and develop a collection of books about animals, plants and nature. Purchase bird and insect books that will help the child identify them. There are books that have recorded sounds of naute so the child can learn to recognize the animals that they are hearing when they walk outside.

10) Develop a photo journal, scrapbook and collection box. Keep the digital camera along with you to take picture of the child in nature. Allow the child to collect leaves, stones or other items from nature to remember this experience. It also sends the message to the child that nature is important to you.

Developing a love of nature and animals allows children to lead richer lives. They develop a sense that they are part of nature and appreciation for everything it gives to the world.

So when the little boy comes proudly with two snakes in each hand. Talk about why it is important to leave them in their natural habitat. Observe them for a little while, take a picture and then reverently set them free.
