When you think of weddings, you usually associate them with spring and summer. These seasons have been known as "wedding season" for years, particularly the months of May and June. Most brides planning their big day choose these months because of the pretty weather, warm temperatures, and abundant flowers that come with them. However, I think another season is often overlooked, a season filled with a bright beautiful color palette just waiting to be used. What better time for a wedding than autumn?
There are several different themes you can go with for an autumn wedding. The most popular idea would be a harvest theme. This is an easy theme to accomplish because there are lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables to use in your decorations. Pumpkins, gourds, and apples can be displayed most anywhere. Indian corn and dried corn stalks can be used too. Bales of hay lend a rustic sense of fun to the occasion and can even be used for seating, particularly at the kids' table. Apple cider is a great beverage choice for this theme whether it is served cold, hot, or spiked. You can also send your guests home with wrapped caramel apples.
Another theme for autumn is what I like to call folk. Decorating for this theme would be similar to a harvest theme, but you could add details like folk art, quilts, and antiques like plows. Dried flowers would also be a good decorating choice. Antique glassware would be great for serving and for centerpieces. Lanterns make nice lighting choices for this theme. For a fun, memorable occasion, go with folk or bluegrass type music (get out your fiddle) and have square dancing.
If you're really into holidays, you can always go with a Halloween or Thanksgiving theme. However, you have to be careful with these ideas because they can easily be overdone. You want your wedding to still resemble a wedding and not seem like a classroom party or a family reunion. You also have to be subtle in your decorations or your wedding will look like a display in a shop window. For a Halloween wedding, I would suggest you avoid costumes, monsters, and witches. Decorate with fake cobwebs, pumpkins, and cloths in Halloween colors instead. Flowers in black cauldrons or vases with orange and black pebbles would make good centerpieces. For lighting, focus on strings of lights, candles, and maybe even a few jack-o-lanterns.(Try dressing jack-o-lanterns as brides and grooms or carving words like "I Do" instead of faces in them.) If you're throwing rice or rose petals,
