Eyebrow shaping: The art of threading

Eyebrow threading is a relatively new and much improved method of getting your eyebrows done. Whether you're just looking for a clean-up or full shaping, once you try this you'll never go back to tweezing or waxing again. This is good for guys/men too who are looking to do some grooming.

Threading is interesting to watch. It doesn't require any of the mess of wax, or half as much time to sit and pluck every single stray hair when tweezing. All they use is thread, a plain spool of white, cotton thread. They begin by unraveling a long piece piece of thread and twisting it. The basic principle is that they run the twisted piece of thread over the hair that needs to be removed, and the hair gets caught in the thread and yanked out. The whole thing only takes about 5-10 minutes.

The first time your get threaded is the worst. It is a different experience from waxing and tweezing, but still uncomfortable. It doesn't hurt anymore than waxing or tweezing though, so don't be scared. Their are benefits however. The hair that grows back in is usually finer and more sparse, so it hurts less and less every time you go. And, since your skin is not being peeled off (waxing) or put under stress (tweezing)it doesn't leave as much irritation. If you are using any facial products that leave your skin a little more sensitive, like Retin-A or acne treatments, I definitely recommend threading over waxing.

This is not something you can do yourself, or at least I am unaware of any ways to do it yourself. You need both hands and you wouldn't be able to angle yourself properly, but if you can figure out a way, please share the secret! But have no fear, you can get your eyebrows threaded for as little as 4$. Most salons that do it will charge you 10$ or more, because it is relatively new here and because salons overcharge. However, this technique originate in India and the Far and Middle East, so if you go directly to the source- an Indian salon or beauty store- in my experience I've never been charged over five dollars.

I personally prefer eyebrow threading to waxing or tweezing, because the thread is able to pick up all the tiny hairs that tweezing misses and with better shaping precision than waxing. It gives for an overall cleaner look and sharper shape that lasts me a little longer than waxing or tweezing.

If you've never tried threading it's definitely worth a shot, you can always go back to waxing/tweezing so you have nothing to lose. Good Luck!
