If I were the president of the United States (impossible because I'm a Canadian citizen), I'd work on cutting the deficit and reducing the national debt, strive to improve education, support campaign finance reform, change foreign policy in a number of aress and also work to improve the voting system. Since the American president's power is restricted by both the senate and the congress, it wouldn't be easy to do all I wanted, but I'd try.
Though Dick Cheney once said that Reagan proved that deficits don't matter, I strongly disagree. I'd argue that in the Reagan era the economy did well in spite of the deficit. Similar analogies might be that a bad coach can succeed with an excellent team and an excellent student can succeed with a mediocre teacher. This doesn't prove that coaches and teachers don't matter. At the moment, the USA is spending twelve trillion dollars a month on Iraq. That's an unbelievable amount. Under such circumstances, it's no wonder that the American dollar is so weak. I'd work on turning Iraq over to the Iraqi army as quickly as possible and minimize the American role in Iraq. Former Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld disbanded the former Iraqi army, an incredibly bad move. I'd work on reinforcing the Iraqi army as soon as possible.
Another area which I'd aim to work on is education. Though the USA has universities and schools recognized as the best in the world, the fact is that many are mediocre. I'd strive to create a system where the difference between public and private schools was not so great. By doing so, it would offer more opportunities to children who did not come from privileged families. I'd also strive to create an education system which put a much greater emphasis on world history and geography, foreign languages, art, commerce and law. Such a system would give students a much better education and prepare them better for the challenges of the modern world.
I'd support campaign finance reform because it seems that in the current American system it's very difficult for a person of modest means to succeed in politics. Unlike in the USA, Canada has a political system which seems to discriminate much less against those who are not millionaires. In the USA, however, spending is often so high that it appears difficult for one who is not wealthy to enter American politics.
Foreign policy is another area which I'd approach very differently. Though it would undoubtedly be an unpopular move with the anti-Castro Cuban Republicans of Miami,

Given the way the 2008 Presidential primaries have unfolded, one has to wonder why anyone would even want to be President.
