I don't agree with steroids or steroid use. But everything has its exception.

Professional athletes routinely take that stuff anyway. Only a fool would believe otherwise. These guys are getting millions of dollars a year to play a game. For most, their careers last for 5-10 years. The only way to stay competitive and make a very short intense career worthwhile is to stay at the top of your game AT ALL COSTS.

For every Barry Bonds, there are ten other players making do with much less. For each of them there is a second stinger getting even less than that. That's a lot of competition for a paycheck that only the best of the best ever get.

Should they be taking steroids? Hell no. That stuff is dangerous and there have been deaths. But when they pay off is this big the allure is irresistible.

If steroids were allowed then they could also be regulated. If it were legal doctors could monitor these men and make sure they are taking proper dosages and that they are not just killing themselves with this crap. As long as these huge salaries are the pay off for excellence this will not go away. Unless teams start standardizing salaries this may be one of the only ways to keep the damage of steroid use to a minimum.
