The media certainly has an impact upon general fitness through the way in which they promote the perfect body. Their promotion of beauty and health products has a tendency to use youthful, healthy images has a tendency to promote the idea that, anyone who does not fit into this catagory is a less worthy person. A classic example of this is the promotion of health foods where the model promoting these already has a slim and trim body. The same could be said of fitness products and routines where those models shown tend to be already be fit individuals.
In many case the media image will result in memebers of the public feeling inadequate. The public are not stupid and they will know, when they look at the bodies used in promotion, that they have no chance of achieving such looks. In this event, the promotion will have a negative affect upon the consumer.
The other impact these images have is financial. By promoting the "body beautiful" in these ways, the media are encouraging consumers to spend vast amounts of money on products and routines that are often of only superficial health and fitness benefits.
The overall effects of "perfect body" promotion can lead to a reduction in self-worth felt by the consumer. These promotions should be altered to reflect a more realistic approach and use a representative section of consumers, rather than concentrate upon a limited type of "body".
