How awesome would that be; I'd change a lot of things to make it easier for the working class. I'd implement more stringent controls on housing prices so that the poor aren't paying 80% of their check towards rent or living in undesirable housing projects. I'd create some form of Universal Health Care, so people wouldn't put off going to the doctor until they are in the emergency room.
If it were up to me, illegals could go through a process to be legal but they wouldn't be afforded any rights to work in the country until they went through that process. The fines on companies that promoted the hiring of illegals would be rather severe, instead of a mere slap on the wrist. I wouldn't legalize anything, but I would try to bring about clearer guidelines for the penalties, more in line with what is going on in the society. There wouldn't be these outrageous sentences for those pushing marijuana and selling crack cocaine, that would free up a lot of our jail cells for real criminals that have committed rather serious crimes, as opposed to those that indirectly impact our society.
I would be a bit tougher on big businesses as well; currently tax breaks favor entrepreneurs and businesses and punish workers, particular the working poor, unfairly. We would eliminate a lot of the laws written into place that allow the government to snoop and spy on regular Americans; at the same time Americans that offer alternate views of patriotism wouldn't be considered enemies of the State either, but real citizens with a different viewpoint. Currently our views on being "unpatriotic" closely mirror the sentiment during the McCarthy hearings.
This country is ready for a black president, or should be. Black men are everywhere else in this society, on all levels, in every job capacity imaginable so it isn't that much of a stretch to imagine that a black man could be president. This country could use a bit something different in it's leadership and should put their money where their mouth is, rather than appreciating African-Americans in one capacity, humoring or entertaining society, but not where it truly counts, and where they could truly make a real difference.
A black president could also provide the catalyst for real change in this country amongst African-Americans; no longer would you have the civil rights leaders, whom often seem to have their own personal agenda, to point to as an excuse for why we are not where we should be. No longer would you be able to say "well a black person has never done that before". We weren't willing to readily accept some of the blacks that are in high places in government because of their conservative views. But this is how things work, and I would rather have a conservative black president than a loudmouth who is going to embarrass any further ...
