us like to know the person 'in charge' has experience. The older the web page, the more google presumes you know what you are doing.
In fact tho there is much denial, most web masters assume there is something called the sandbox. A place where new web sites are relegated until they earn some 'street creds'. I am guessing, but the links to your site are judged on age and the 'authority' or pagerank of the site linking to you. While the pagerank algorithm itself is one of the most closely held secrets in the industry, trial and error has created a general consensus of some of the factors involved.
Since there is soooo much money involved in getting to the top of the Google listings for any given category. There will be intense competition for even the tiniest edge over the competition. Once you are on page 3 or 4 of the Google 'organic' results for your keyword, you might as well give it up. There is all kinds of competition waiting to grab your market share. And while Google probably doesn't have any innate prejudice against commercial enterprise. They appear to get pretty upset by 'cheaters'.
You can get banned by Google and that is pretty much a death sentence as far as market share. If you try to legitimately create back links, you have a very small chance of ever getting the bums rush, but if you get caught play 'stupid SEO tricks' you will probably get a pretty heavy penalty. Selling your authority as links is definitely frowned on. And Google has a pretty intensive campaign going on to 'punish' those who are jiggin the system so to speak. Its in their best interest to keep customers satisfied with both new products and continually keeping an eye on the cash cow that is the search engine.
The best way to succeed on the web is content. If you write it... they will come. Be informative on a topic, research what you write. ASK the people who are currently reading your site why the came and did they get what they were looking for. The web has a way of spreading a good thing. Some call it viral and others just see it as an extension of society. Either way word of mouth so to speak is what you are looking for.
Most people who are interested in a topic talk or communicate with others that share their interests. This is how word of the 'new kid in town' gets around. Bulletin boards and chat rooms are probably the most overlooked method of getting a group of motivated users into your corner. Where do you spend your on line time. Are you connected to other people on line and can you ask them questions about what is and isn't needed in the area you are persuing.
Write, write early, write often... write until your fingers bleed. Express your opinions, your new ideas, and your heartfelt thanks. Post to every topic of interest on the bulletin board of your choice, make a pest of yourself. Ask every question you can think of and then record the answers to frame some new questions.
Pagerank is affected by both your internal actions and what the public thinks of your web page. There is much you can do to legitimately improve your pagerank, but in the end there are many factors you simply can't control. Don't plan on making a killing on the web, do it because you have a passion for it, if you get good, the money will come. There are no shortcuts, despite what the ads say about having all the secrets of SEO and the ear of Sergey or Larry, they don't and you can look up just about anything you need to know on Googles site.
So enjoy your surfing and start typing, you have a long long way to go. But most of all enjoy the trip, if you do, then you can't be disappointed by the destination.
