Developing healthy eating habits in kids

Developing healthy eating habits in kids should start as soon as they are able to eat solids. The healthier they are taught to eat from the beginning will help them to lead a healthier lifestyle for years to come. Of course children are always going to be around junk food and it is alright to allow some here and there, but not to often. One of the best ways to teach your children healthy eating habits is to lead by example. If they see their parents eating healthy then they are most likely to follow your footsteps.

Here are some helpful tips that can help you with teaching your child to eat healthy.

1. Eat your meals together as a family. Make it a routine in your home to eat dinner together every night. Since you are in control of what your family eats for dinner make sure that it includes healthy choices. Encourage your children to eat their vegetables by eating them yourself. Make sure that you are listening to your own advice!

2. When you do your families grocery shopping bring along your kids and have them pick out some healthy snacks instead of alot of junk food. Allowing them to choose their own snacks will encourage them to want to eat them more. Allow them to choose from a variety of different healthy choices available in the store.

3. If there is not junk food in your house then there is none for them to eat. You are in charge of the food that enters your home, so make sure you buy healthy foods rather then junk foods. Of course a little junk food is fine, after all that is part of being a kid. Just make the junk food a rare treat and healthy foods a way of life.

4 Reduce the amount of snacking all through he day. This will help your child eat at their meal times better.

5. Praise your child when they eat well. This will help encourage them to continue eating well to get the praise they love from their parents.

6. Do not make it a battle. Fighting and yelling at your children will not help matter at all! This will only make them resent the food more. IF they do not eat it then tell them they can not snack later on or offer them a healthy snack instead.

7. Never use food as a reward or punishment. This will make your children view food differently. Do not bribe or threaten certain foods to your child ever.

8. Make sure that the whole family is involved in healthy eating habits. Getting the whole family involved will help make it easier for your child.

So many kids are overweight these days and it is an epidemic that each parent needs to take control of. With so many children overweight and others with eating disorders it is so important to instill in your children the healthiest eating habits to help with their self esteem. Maintaining a healthy way of life is crucial to the step in helping your child for years to come. Make sure that you are a good role model and not only eat healthy but get exercise! It will encourage your child to follow your footsteps since you are their first teacher.
