Parents always want their children to have successful and fulfilling lives. It is the job and desire of parents to give their children the skills and abilities they will need to do this. No, sewing is not a necessity, but it is a helpful tool for parents in helping their children to succeed.
Of all the reasons there are to teach or children at least the basics of sewing, the most important is to broaden their horizons. The benefits are only beginning when learning to sew helps them to become more balanced and patient children. As they become adults, it can not only open their minds to many new careers, but it could give them the ability to go after them. Basic skills in sewing are either required or highly recommended for any careers in decorating or fashion as well as many others. And the benefits don't have to end when they are old either, they will be able to share with their own children and grandchildren this invaluable skill that could end up being passed on for generations.
For adults and children alike, sewing can be a great (and useful) hobby. We all need hobbies to relax and still be productive and sewing may just be your child's favorite thing to do once they are taught how, especially if you spend time doing it with them. That alone would be a great reason to teach them.
Aside from any career options and hobbies, sewing is just a practical skill to have. There will be times in their lives when a pair of pants are too long and a button falls off of a shirt, it happens to all of us. Knowing the basics of sewing in these everyday occasions will save them time, the aggravation and the money (sometimes unnecessarily large amounts) that it costs to have items hemmed, repaired or altered.
Even if the child you taught to sew doesn't even remember how to turn the machine on in a few years, they will always remember the fun you both had and the quality time you spent with them teaching them how to sew.
