Marriage is arguably one of the most life-changing events in an individual's life. Making a commitment for the rest of one's life can certainly cause a groom to experience some nervousness in the weeks or days before his wedding. "Cold feet" is a common occurrence for both brides and grooms, particularly as the wedding date grows closer. But, what do your do when you are serving as the best man to a groom with cold feet? Take a look at the following tips to help you assist your groom in making a decision that could ultimately change the course of his life forever.
As the best man, it is not your job to force the groom down the aisle if he is having second thoughts. Instead, you should be there to support him and help him sort through his feelings so that on the big day he is confident and sure about walking down the aisle.
Talk to your groom-to-be about why he is feeling nervous. Some "petty" issues can arise in the stressful months before a wedding; however, some more serious problems can certainly come about during this period of time as well. It is your job to serve as a spring board to your friend. Do your best to listen, and if you feel like there is even one red flag, let him know!
If your groom is concerned because he and his fiance are spending less time in the bedroom and more time talking about wedding linens, soothe his fears. Let him know that it is absolutely normal for a couple to experience a decline in their sexual activity in the weeks or months before their wedding. The root of this petty problem can be found in pre-wedding stress. This stress undeniably creates a lot of irritation, and nothing kills the mood quicker than an irritable partner. Tell your buddy to relax. He hasn't had his last romp yet! If the thought of the honeymoon doesn't put a smile on your pal's face, then suggest that he and his bride-to-be take a weekend getaway, where NO wedding details can be discussed. Not only will this help him and his fiance work out their bedroom issues, it will also help him score big points in the romance department with his bride-to-be.
The evil pre-wedding stress can also cause your buddy to start picking apart all of his beloved's behaviors, especially if the wedding-planning process has turned her into a bridezilla. Her little quirks may start getting on his nerves, but as best man, it's your job to reassure him that the rest of his life won't be spent hating his wife because of the way she snorts when she laughs. Remind him of the reasons why he loves her in the first place, and the irritation (and pre-wedding nervousness) is likely to melt away.
While pre-wedding stress can certainly lead to cold feet, your groom's wedding jitters might be rooted in issues that are much deeper than stress. If your pal is feeling nervous for a good reason, you might want to suggest postponing or canceling the wedding. Irritability may not be a cause for concern, but if your groom-to-be's fiance has an addiction, or has betrayed your friend in some way; these issues are huge red flags that need to be addressed immediately. As best man, step up and take on the role of helping your friend put a hold on things until these issues have been resolved. Or, get him some cab fare and send him packing!
