Of course there shouldn't. I mean, really, why cut off someone from driving just because they're old? I don't want to hit 75 (or whenever) and suddenly, I can't drive anymore.
An age-based system for driving at that age is ridiculous. If someone is able to drive well, why stop them from driving just because they hit a certain age? They can still drive, some of them better than 30-year olds. Now, I understand that some older people can be much more dangerous on the road, and something needs to be done about that. But what? Here's what I propose:
Once someone hits retirement age, they are required, every five years, to get their license renewed with the standard driving test given to teenagers. Once they get to 70/75, that drops to every two years. At 85, the test must be taken yearly.
Unfair, you say? How is it unfair? If a teen can't pass the test, they aren't allowed to drive. Why should it be any different for an adult? And, while we can be fairly confident that most adults between 25-60 years old still have the capacity to drive well, that becomes more and more uncertain as the person gets older.
Ageism? Of course it is! But, then again, so is preventing a 12-year old from driving, drinking, smoking, and watching porn. It would simply be irresponsible not to do it.
