Beginning sewing projects can turn out to be frustrating and discouraging if a pattern or instructions are too complicated, but there are some very simple (and practical) projects, that will, once finished, leave you excited and confident in your skills and wanting to tackle more involved projects.
If you have never sewn before, make sure you have browsed through your machine's manual. It is also a good idea to practice basic stitches on remnants or scrap fabrics.
The first project is a simple pillowcase, this will be quicker and easier than trying to start with the typical beginner's throw pillow. You will need a pillowcase for a guide, fabric and thread. (Make sure the fabric is washed first so it doesn't shrink and become deformed after it is sewn.) There are only two seams (the bottom and side) and one hem on a pillowcase, so all you will need to do is cut and sew your fabric using your existing pillowcase as a pattern. It's that easy!
Other projects that are quick and simple are cloth napkins, a table cloth, or table runner. For any one of these projects, you can again use pieces that you already have as guides, or you can just decide what size you would like them to be based on your table. Since these projects are all squares or rectangles, after you have cut your fabric, all you will need to do is hem the four edges.
There is always more satisfaction in sewing when what you make is practical and something that you or someone else will use. Every time it is used, you will be proud of yourself and even though you spent a lot less money on them, the pieces will be much more valuable to you than anything you would have purchased already made!
