The link between self harm and emo

Anyone who attempts to link a person's actions with the music they listen to is mistaken. I believe that the actions a person takes, in serious cases such as violence towards oneself or others, is the cause of their character, upbringing, mood etc. They music they listen to is another consequence of these things. So if a young person feels depresses, alienated or misunderstood there are a number of possible consequences - 2 of these happen to be self-harm and listening to music that appears to be made by people in a similar position or at least by people who understand what the listener is feeling. I do not believe the two results are related in any way other than this - the music we choose to listen to is a passive expression of how we feel; self-harm is an active expression.

To put this argument another way: if you were to play emo music to a very happy, middle-aged, successful business person for example he probably neither enjoy it nor harm himself. But if you play it to a depressed and rebellious teenager they would be more likely to enjoy it and more likely to self-harm, though neither is guaranteed. The music we listen does not affect are actions it is merely an expression of emotion. (I do believe though that emo music should be banned on the basis of lack of artistic value - its whining crap)
