Summertime has always held a special significance for my husband and I; it's the time of year when we met and started dating, and held a lot of great memories for us; so when we were deciding to get married, it seemed a natural for us to get married during this time of year. And why not? Summer weddings are beautiful; think of the bright, stunning flowers available, and the gorgeous, sunny weather! Summer weddings are beautiful, all right, and a summer wedding in Dallas is beautiful to be sure; beautiful, and hot. Extraordinarily hot. Triple digits hot. And as I stood in the poorly air-conditioned, very crowded chapel in my heavy wedding dress, with the sweat forming a pool below me on the carpet, it was then that I realized; could we have waited a few months?
We sure could have. While summer will most likely always remain the most popular time of year for weddings, the months of October and November are not far behind. Not only are there great holidays during these months, but the natural beauty of this time of year provides a beautiful backdrop for weddings and receptions. Below are some fun ideas to utilize this great (and weather-friendly) time of year for your wedding.
1) Halloween: One fun idea that comes from this time of year is Halloween. This holiday can hold a special meaning for couples: perhaps they met on Halloween at a costume party, or they both just really like candy and getting it for free. While it may seem a bit non-traditional, goth is a very popular style, and having a wedding and reception tailored around this holiday might be right up some couples' alleys.
2) Harvest: Still following the Halloween theme but on a lighter note, a harvest theme would be beautiful: try artfully carved jack-o-lanterns as table centerpieces at the reception, with squashes and other gourds used as decoration as well. The bouquets of the brides and other arrangements can hold such fall flora as chrysanthemums and sunflowers, both fall staples. There are also many shades of roses and tulips, both premium wedding flowers, which are available in fall shades, such as deeper reds, oranges, and yellows. Bridesmaids' dresses can be is several attractive shades of red, orange/rust, brown, or gold.
3) Thanksgiving: A favorite holiday for many, why not incorporate this family-centered holiday into the most beautiful joining of two families? The food possibilities are endless, and since many families travel to one place or another for turkey anyway, you could easily parlay this into a reason to join altogether for one big shindig.
4) OUTSIDE-dun dun dun!: While the outdoor wedding comes with certain risks, the season with perhaps the most reward for those risks is fall, with the beautiful turning of the foliage and weather that is sure to be a few degrees cooler than the summer, even in the south. How beautiful would a wedding be under an arbor, surrounded by the dazzling reds and oranges of the falling leaves?
These are just a few ways to have a special wedding celebration during a time of the year that can often be left by the wayside. Make this time of year special to you by planning your wedding during it, and you will have a lovely reminder year after year, as soon as the leaves start to fall.
