"My Baby Beauty Contest Nightmare!"
All moms believe that their precious little bundle of joy is the most beautiful baby, hands down! I am no exception. When my little girl was only three months old, I had discovered an advertisement in my local paper describing an upcoming baby pageant. Being the proud mother of a very beautiful, little girl with dainty red curls gracing the top of her tiny head, big blue eyes that bring to mind a stormy sea, and perfect little red heart shaped lips, I just knew that she would win!
So I entered her in the pageant and received a letter explaining the different categories in which she would be participating in for her age group. She would be judged on photo, physical beauty, personality, and of course the swim wear competition. The pageant would last three weeks.
The first week was designated for the photo competition. I went through all of her baby pictures and decided on one where she is wearing a sweet little white lace gown and fluffy lavender angel wings. I sent it in to be judged and low and behold, out of almost one hundred and fifty babies in her age group, she took second place! Boy was I excited!
The second week was for the physical beauty and personality portions of the pageant. I stressed out ,to say the least, on what she should wear. I didn't like the huge dresses that have so many ruffles and layers that you wonder if there is even a baby inside. Being a single mom of a newborn and on a very tight budget, I really couldn't afford to have a dress custom made for her either.
So I took a soft but simple lilac colored dress that she already had; purchased some ribbon in pastel pink, purple, blue and white, and went to work creating my own version of a pageant dress. Luckily, the dress already had a gossamer over lay and was made in what I assume would be called an "empire waist" type design. All I had to do to fancy it up more was cut strips of ribbon and hand sew them, alternating the colors, around the waistline. After that was done, I took plain white baby socks and stitched a couple of scrape pieces of ribbon on them to match the dress. This project went fairly well and turned out absolutely adorable. She resembled a little fairy, only without wings.
All decked out in her new dress and socks, it was time to present her to the judges. Several of the other infants that went before her screamed and cried and did what most babies tend to do when in a room full of strangers. Not my child
