When OJ didn't pay an assistant, that same assistant stormed into OJ's storage and took memorabilia he would sell later. This included his name plaque from the Heisman Trophy which had been handed over to the Goldman family. The plaque was later returned to the Goldmans.
I believe OJ knew about, if not agreed to, the removal of the memorabilia as a way to keep it all out of the hands of the Goldmans (per settlement agreement from the Goldman/Nicole Brown Simpson Civil suit). I think OJ was double crossed by the assistant, who sold the merchandise to the collector/victim of the case, which set the whole Las Vegas affair in motion. It was reported that OJ had first notified the FBI of his intentions. The FBI may have had direct knowledge of the plan beforehand, but did not condone the action from being followed through.

Did OJ plan the break-in? Yes.
Did he know guns would be involved? Maybe not at first, he seemed to just have wanted to be backed with some muscle. That muscle (the men accompanying OJ) seemed to have brought the guns. OJ seemed to just use his temper, size and anger to do the intimidating.
Did OJ accomplish his task? It will be for the court to decide who exactly gets possession of the memorabilia. Probably the Goldmans, after all the dust has settled.
Is OJ guilty of theft? Yes! But that is probably the smallest issue in the case.
He is guilty of the fact that for years he has planned and has tried to hide personal assets from the families of the loved ones he brutally killed. (As ruled in the civil case.)
This will all be resolved in the new court case.
He will get jail time and it will still be less than a double murder rap.
But it will spark at least one more court case where he will probably have to give up the memorabilia for good.
And why not? They seem to be of real (curiosity) value now. More value than they have had for years.
