Short stories: Skipping school

=SKIPPING WITH MARIA=

"Bro, check it out! Let's cap some roofies off Carlos. Then we could go to your pad and drink." Maria said that to me about every other week. That day I said yes. My high school was called South Ref because it was mostly Cuban people that went there. Maria wasn't Cuban though, she was Ecuadorian. Once she fed me "la lengua" cow's tongue. I was half way through my dinner when she told me what it was. I picked it right up and tossed at her, while her and her brothers laughed at me. After that, I made them some chicken Alfredo, to show them something different, because they ate rice everyday. They loved it so much that they mentioned it every time I came around.

I was the "gringa" the American, which I always loved. I was such a minority that it made me feel unique. In tenth grade we had a lot of fun. I was very out going and managed to gather a group of about fifteen girls. They jokingly called us the "chongas". I still don't really know what that means. We got into some trouble, that's for sure. Not all of us though, some girls were more level headed than me.

=BREAKING OUT=

At South Ref, if you want to skip, you have to do two things: 1. Walk about a quarter mile length of sidewalk off school grounds without being seen by a golf cart security patrol. Even though some of the guys were cool, they would still bust you for skipping. 2. Have a plan where getting high or having fun is involved. That day with Maria, we planned to get roofies and go to my house, but things got changed up.

When we got to Carlos's French class, we tapped on the little door window and asked his teacher if we could talk to him for a minute. The teacher said yes. Those teachers never cared much about anything. He would sell us the stuff right in the hallway. On this day he didn't have roofies, he had acid. That kinda scared me cause I hadn't done it before. We wanted to try it, so we got one to share. Next, we would have to get off school grounds before "Snoop" the patrol guard saw us. As we were walking, he was way down the B wing corridor when he spotted us. It was a beautiful day outside, and we didn't want to stay to get in trouble. So we ran as fast as we could down the long sidewalk to this street that was named after a girl who went to our school (sad story). When Snoop rounded the corner, we were too far off for him to catch us. As we walked past the small, colorful houses, we were panting and giggling. Snoop was going to have a word with us about that one on a later
